The singer known as "Mr. Big Stuff" Jean Knight has passed away at the age of 80.
Knight, whose classic song from 1971 was at the top of the charts for five weeks, passed away in her birthplace of New Orleans on Wednesday, according to a statement released by her family that was published by New Orleans broadcaster LBJ on X (previously known as Twitter) on Sunday.
According to TMZ, the singer passed away from natural causes. Rolling Stone was also provided with confirmation of Knight's passing by her close friend Bernie Cyrus.
According to a statement released by Jean Knight's family, "New Orleans and the music world moves the loss of one of its most treasured, musical daughters, Jean Knight, he departed this world on November 22, 2023, at the age of 80," is what the statement says. Ms. Knight, who was born and raised in New Orleans, went on to become an important figure in the musical history of the city.In 1965, when Knight was 22 years old, she recorded her first demo track, which was a rendition of Jackie Wilson's song "Stop Doggin' Me Around." Not long after that, she signed her first recording contract with the Jet Star/Tribe label.
In spite of this, her career was sluggish to take off, and she coupled singing with working a day job as a baker until she gained huge success with "Mr. Big Stuff," which was published by the legendary Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Until that point, she sang while also doing the day job.
According to Rolling Stone and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, the Grammy-nominated song is one of the most identifiable classic funk singles of all time and has gone on to sell more than three million copies. The song was also nominated for a Grammy.
