Jacksonville Shooting Victims Mourned As Racist Dollar General Store Gunman Named | 10 News First NoirPlus+ CHANNEL ONE 26 Views • 2 years ago

A white gunman who killed three Black people during a racially motivated rampage at a Dollar General Store in Jacksonville, Florida purchased the firearms he used in the attack legally, the city's sheriff confirmed. The 21-year-old man, Ryan Christopher Palmeter, had no criminal arrest history before he launched what police have described as an anti-Black hate crime, with racist rhetoric found in three manifestos written before the shootings. Authorities are investigating the case as an act of racially motivated extremism, with Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters saying the shooter's thoughts were "irrational" but he was "100% lucid".

Georgia State Rep. Shea Roberts (D) reacts to Republican efforts to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis due to the charges brought against Donald Trump. "It would violate her sworn duty not to prosecute if there is probable cause" Roberts says, adding that Willis is doing what Republicans have asked for when it comes to investigating all possible crimes.

Maverick City Music: Tiny Desk Concert
Maverick City Music: Tiny Desk Concert NoirTube Music 26 Views • 2 years ago

This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts — both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Suraya Mohamed | June 23, 2022
Almost 30 musicians, choir members and staff of the contemporary worship music collective Maverick City Music entered the NPR lobby and crowded the security desk to undergo COVID protocols. Even through the dull process of checking vaccination cards and test results, there was a real feeling of excitement for what was about to happen.

Some of the choir members were eager not only for the upcoming Tiny Desk concert but for later that evening, when they were scheduled to perform at a sold-out 20,000-seat arena nearby. A few of them had only previously performed with Maverick City Music in small venues and couldn't wait to move from the Tiny Desk to a big stage. Once upstairs, the group's enthusiasm grew during the set up and sound check. Even the NPR production staff was buzzing because we had not recorded such a large ensemble in our office in more than two years.

Once the performance started, Maverick City Music did what it always does. The members of the group became one voice, sharing beautiful music and spreading the good word with messages of hope, change and love. The group describes itself as a megaphone for a community of creatives that has been pushed to the margins of the industry of church music. Even for those who aren't fans of gospel music or for those who don't believe, it is possible to still find appreciation in this music's comforting and uplifting sound.

Most of the songs performed here are from the collective's new album, Kingdom Book One, which was produced in collaboration with gospel legend Kirk Franklin. It was a blessing to watch him perform here alongside talented vocalists Naomi Raine and Chandler Moore on the last song, "Kingdom."

This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Bobby Carter | June 30, 2023
"WTF is a Tiny Desk and no!" are the words that led to one of the most publicized journeys any musician has taken to get to NPR headquarters. That was Juvenile's response to Twitter user @theylovemyke's request for him to play a Tiny Desk concert back in April. His response ignited Black Twitter, launching a barrage of tweets and reposts of favorite performances at the Desk, as fans implored the "T.C. soldier" to reconsider. His viral reconsideration led to a few DMs, which led to a few phone calls, and the date was set. Juve, like some rappers in his class, had never heard of our little nook in Washington, D.C., but he soon found out.

The pressure to deliver was palpable in the planning stages but as the band was assembled, my expectations were exceeded. Tiny Desk alumni and New Orleans natives Trombone Shorty and Alvin Ford were brought into the fold. Another Tiny Desk vet from New Orleans, Jon Batiste, flew in from London just to be a part of the set. Juvenile sourced The Amours from right here in D.C. to handle background vocals, along with string players from the Louisiana Philharmonic for the grand finale. The architect of the Juvenile/Cash Money Records sound, DJ Mannie Fresh, became the glue that pieced it all together. The result was one of the most rambunctious experiences at the Desk. The Hot Boy coasted through highlights from a decades-long, groundbreaking career, concluding with a performance of "Back That Azz Up," so exuberant that the audience demanded an encore and the band obliged. A Tiny Desk first.

SET LIST
"Intro (feat. Mannie Fresh)"
"400 Degreez (feat. Mannie Fresh)"
"Bling Bling (feat. Mannie Fresh)"

“Toward the end of his life, Dr. King's focus was on the Poor Peoples’ Campaign – fighting for a living, minimum wage and labor rights, and stopping the [Vietnam] war,” @joyannreid says. “Which makes it all the more shameful when conservatives use the MLK holiday to tweet lukewarm, fuzzy quotes that they don't even fully understand.”
