Trump spoke to supporters in another part of the Capitol, promising "you're going to see a lot of action" on defendants charged in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Many expect the "action" to take the form of sweeping pardons of the defendants.
In his post-Inauguration speech, Trump also criticized preemptive pardons that former President Joe Biden issued early on Monday, before leaving office. The pardons cover former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, the select committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters, as well as all lawmakers, including former Representative Liz Cheney, who served on the congressional committee and police officers who testified before it. They also covered Anthony Fauci, who served as White House chief medical advisor during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump's second speech of the day had a different tone than his inauguration address, which he called "beautiful" and "unifying." In his later speech, he repeatedly told supporters that he preferred it to the Inauguration speech, adding that he had wanted to include those topics, but had been advised against it.
